LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WTHR) - A murder and arson investigation in Lafayette has now crossed state lines.
Police believe they've found a person of interest in Ohio but say that person shot himself during a standoff with police.
Work is ongoing at the three houses owned by Ron Whiles along 31st Street in Lafayette.
He actually owns as many as 12 in the community, mostly rentals, but there is one that police are interested in.
"We received a 911 call from a male stating he had been stabbed and the house was on fire," Lt. Matt Gard told Eyewitness News.
Police identified that man as Thomas Day.
Day remains in critical but stable condition.
"They found another victim inside suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. That person was identified as Ron Whiles," Lt. Gard added.
Ron was a nice guy. Everybody loved him. Friends have been stopping by everyday giving condolences. He would do anything for anybody. Very nice guy. Would give you the shirt off his back," friends and neighbors shared.
Police investigation led them to Dayton, Ohio where an 11-hour-standoff ended in gunfire as a man they wanted to talk to, Andrew Alcorns, suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and is now still being treated at a Dayton, Ohio hospital.
People know what happened but they don't know why and the answer to that may very well be in Dayton.
