Kroger dietitian offers healthy Halloween alternatives

A registered dietitian stopped by 13Sunrise to offer more nutritious Halloween treat alternatives, while enjoying the sweet annual tradition.

INDIANAPOLIS — Halloween is Tuesday, and it's all about the candy.

This time of year, parents ask Laura Brown, a Kroger Health registered dietitian, for advice. She said a little extra sugar this time of year won't ruin their health.

Her advice is one piece of candy at mealtime. She said allowing some candy decreases the obsession and lets families focus on the rest of the meal.

Brown recommends enjoying a snack or meal before trick-or-treating begins. Going out with a full stomach makes kids less likely to overdo it on candy later. She suggests foods with protein, fiber and fat before going out the door.

Fun snack ideas include simple clementine pumpkins or string cheese ghosts.

She also offered a "Frankenstein Layered Dip Recipe."

Kroger dietitians are available to discuss a variety of issues. You can schedule an online health appointment, dietitian consulting or tele nutrition appointment all from home.

Kroger is also offering a new concept called OptUp. The nutrition rating system helps shoppers make nutritious choices.
