KENTLAND, Ind. — Two people were hospitalized after a crash involving a train, semi and passenger car in northwest Indiana Tuesday afternoon.
The crash happened around 12:30 p.m. Dec. 3 at the intersection of US 41 and US 24 in the town of Kentland in Newton County.
The sheriff's office said a preliminary investigation indicated a northbound semi driven by a 36-year-old man from Addison, Illinois, stopped at a light before going into the intersection.
A train traveling westbound hit the semi, pushing it into a passenger car that was being driven by a 17-year-old girl from Chicago. That car was in the turn lane waiting to turn.
"During the crash the semi and passenger car were pulled approximately 60 feet from the intersection," the sheriff's office said in a statement.
The 17-year-old girl was flown to an Indianapolis hospital. The semi driver was taken to Iroquois Memorial Hospital in Watseka, Illinois. Police have not shared the severity of their injuries.
The area was closed for roughly seven hours during the cleanup and investigation.
