INDIANAPOLIS — If you're planning a spring wedding and looking for a unique local setting, this news is for you.
Right now, the local Latinas Welders Guild is building a replica Eiffel Tower to be placed on Georgia Street near the front of the Indiana Convention Center, in time for the U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials in June.
The 66-foot tall tower will light up at night, like the original in Paris.
There is currently a search underway to find a couple that would like to get married beneath the Indy tower in June.
If you or someone you know is interested, contact Dan Gilot at the Indiana Sports Corp at 317-237-5000.
The Latinas Welding Guild has been working on the project since last year. 13News reported on their efforts in a September story.
"And so we kind of landed on 50-foot for this Eiffel Tower structure, and so it's still in the planning stages," said Consuelo Lockhart, the founder and executive director of the Latinas Welders Guild. "We're excited because our team gets to be part of the build, and then we wanted to invite people from the community to come in and see the construction of this big piece."
It's a piece that could be tucked away near the canal downtown.
"The hopes with this Eiffel Tower is to kind of be this landmark monumental thing, so when visitors come to Indy, they get a great backdrop for photos, but also it's accessible to walkers, bikers," Lockhart said. "I would've never imagined myself building a 50-foot Eiffel Tower."
