Judge to decide troubled Greenwood hotel's fate in a matter of days

The city of Greenwood closed down the Fanta Suites last year for health and safety hazards.

GREENWOOD, Ind. — A Johnson County judge is now deciding the future of the troubled Red Carpet Inn and Fanta Suites hotel in Greenwood.

That follows a hearing Wednesday afternoon in Johnson County Superior Court.

The city of Greenwood closed down the hotel last year for health and safety hazards.

They planned to demolish it, but a court-ordered stay in April was meant to allow the owner to make repairs.

In the hearing Wednesday, city employees said they shared photos with the court showing conditions — due to lack of maintenance — have only gotten worse. They said there's been vandalism, small fires, squatters and break-ins at the hotel.

Police and firefighters said they even had to board up the place three times in one week.

The Red Carpet Inn and Fanta Suites' owner, Ahmed Mubarak of Lodging & Trade, LLC, did not have an attorney representing him.

The city is asking the court to uphold the demolition order and get the hotel torn down.

The judge's decision is expected within 30 days.
