Hundreds of people could share in a settlement of a class-action lawsuit filed after they were jailed more than 48 hours without probable cause. But many other lawsuits are still working their way through Indiana courts.
Lawsuits have been filed in at least five counties alleging violations of Fourth Amendment rights. A lawsuit involving a LaGrange County man and woman arrested in 2008 near a meth lab is expected to be the first to be settled. Lawsuits also are pending in Whitley, Allen, Clark and St. Joseph County.
The Times reports the cases have exposed jail policies that violate the constitution.
The LaGrange County jail is changing its policy on bookings to require officers to sometimes lengthen their shifts to finish paperwork related to arrests.
