INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - New technology may help identify inmates coming in and out of the Marion County jail.

The sheriff and administrators unveiled a new retina scanner that will be used when people are booked into the jail.

Officials say the device can identify someone in a matter of seconds.

It's more reliable and a quicker method than fingerprinting.

"We, as leaders of police departments and sheriffs, have to stay one step ahead of the bad guy," said Marion County John Layton.

The scanner will also allow them to cross-check criminal history with any other agency using the retina scanner system,.

However, this is the first department in Indiana to use the technology.
