JACKSON COUNTY, Ind. — A southern Indiana sheriff's deputy is being recognized for his actions after rescuing a woman trapped in her car during rising floodwaters.
Around 5:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, the Jackson County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call from a North Vernon woman who said her car was in floodwaters, and she was trapped with water coming into the car quickly.
Dispatchers determined the car was in the 9000 block of East 50 North, about 10 minutes south of Seymour.
Mark Holt, an off-duty Jackson County sheriff's deputy, was a few miles east of the car at the time and responded to the scene. He located the woman's 2019 Honda SUV on the side of the road with water rising over the hood and the woman still trapped inside, with water up to her neck.
"Without hesitation, Deputy Holt entered the water and was able to get (the woman) out of the vehicle and placed in his patrol vehicle to get her warm," the sheriff's department said in a statement.
The deputy took the woman to Schneck Medical Center, with assistance from other deputies. She was treated for possible hypothermia.
"Deputy Holt's quick response kept this incident from being a lot worse," Jackson County Sheriff Rick Meyer said in a statement.
