IU student dies after swimming accident in Lake Tahoe

Deputies said the accident happened Sunday afternoon in rough waters.

CARSON CITY, Nev. — Indiana University officials confirm a student died over the weekend near Carson City, Nevada. 

The Carson City Sheriff's Office said 20-year-old Owen McDonough died after being rescued from rough waters at Whale Beach, along the East Shore of Lake Tahoe. 

Deputies said the accident happened Sunday, July 28 around 5:15 p.m. 

Witnesses said McDonough was swimming with friends to offshore rocks and was overcome by rough waters, disappearing beneath the surface. 

McDonough was pulled from the water to the beach, where attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. 

Deputies said McDonough was not wearing a lifejacket. 

McDonough was a student at IU in the media school, pursing a degree in sports media. 

McDonough is from the Cincinnati area.
