BLOOMINGTON (WTHR) - Expect big changes to security at Indiana University football and basketball games this season.
At the recommendation of a security firm, IU Athletics will be implementing a new clear bag and metal detector policy for home games at Memorial Stadium and Assembly Hall.
IU plans to provide free clear bags at the August 31 football home opener against Ohio State. The compliant bags will be handed out to fans in the tailgating lots before the game.
The university emphasizes that these additional measures are not in response to any specific threat as no such threat has been received.
The clear bag policy requires that all items fans wish to bring into the stadium or Assembly Hall fit in either a clear plastic bag that does not exceed 12"x6"x12", or a one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag with or without a handle that does not exceed 4.5"x6.5".
Each fan is allowed one small bag and one clear plastic bag that meets the listed requirements.
New walk through metal detectors will also be put in place at each gate of Memorial Stadium and Assembly Hall starting this year.
Fans are encouraged to arrive early to games to allow extra time for security screening and to sign up for IU text alerts by texting "IUFB" to 313131.
