'It makes you feel unsafe' | Vandals leave graffiti on Haughville properties

One neighbor told 13News he took matters into his own hands.

INDIANAPOLIS — Residents of Haughville tell 13News they're tired of the graffiti that has been popping up all over the community.

One neighbor told us he took matters into his own hands.

"I made arrangements to get an extra camera to put up here," Charles Porter said.

Porter can't believe what happened.

"I got a call from my neighbor about a week ago. He told me someone had written on my garage and his garage. I didn't know what that was so I came back and looked. When I looked, it had this graffiti on it," Porter said.

Numbers and letters were written in bright red paint on his garage. But it wasn't just on his garage. He said he saw red markings on his neighbor's garage, on a neighbor's fence and another house nearby.

"I didn't know what symbols they were, if it was gang-related or what. I wanted to know that... why after 20 years I lived here in this house, nothing happened like that before? Now all of a sudden, we are being tagged," Porter said. "It makes you feel unsafe if someone is roaming through the night and writing on your garage and stuff."

Haughville residents reported numbers and letters written in bright red paint on garages and homes.

The vandalism didn't come with a cheap fix.

"We had to get a special paint that would take the graffiti off where you couldn't tell it was there. It cost $100 to have that done. That's $100 I have to pay, which I don't really have to do that, but I had to do it to get it off my garage," Porter said.

13News reached out to IMPD about the concerns. They told us they were aware of the graffiti around the city but were not able to say if any of it was gang-related.

Porter says he may not be able to see the red tags anymore, but he'll never forget what's underneath the fresh coat of white paint.

"All I want to know is just why could somebody live in a neighborhood and come and destroy someone's property for no reason," Porter said.

If you have specific information about this graffiti or any gang activity in the city, you're asked to report it to the police.
