ISP: New Castle SWAT officers fatally shoot man during standoff

The incident happened in the 200 block of North 29th Street, just north of Broad Street.

NEW CASTLE, Ind. — Indiana State Police is investigating after New Castle SWAT officers fatally shot a man during a standoff at a home overnight.

Shortly before 10:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16, New Castle Police Department officers responded to a report of shots fired at the home in the 200 block of North 29th Street, just north of Broad Street.

The officers set up a perimeter around the home and made communication with the people inside, "peacefully (removing)" two people from inside.

A suspect, identified by state police as 59-year-old Donald Guffey Jr., of New Castle, barricaded himself inside the home and refused to answer communication from police, ISP said.

The New Castle/Henry County Joint SWAT Team responded to the scene and continued attempting to talk with Guffey.

"At some point, Guffey approached a front window of the residence with a firearm and engaged officers, ending with two officers from the New Castle Swat team discharging their department-issued rifles," state police said in a statement.

Guffey was struck "at least once" by the shots and was later pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

No officers or other citizens were injured.

On Oct. 20, ISP released the names of the officers involved in the shooting as five-year veteran Patrolman Ellis Evans and a nine-year veteran Patrolman Tyler Reece. According to the results of the investigation, Guffey allegedly pointed a firearm at police officers, causing the deadly response.

The case will now be turned over the Henry County prosecutor for review.
