ISP: Man with knife shot by police at Evansville Regional Airport

The man was listed in critical condition at an Evansville hospital Saturday morning, police said. No officers were injured.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Indiana State Police is investigating after a man who police said "aggressively moved toward officers" with a knife was shot by police at Evansville Regional Airport overnight.

Around 12:15 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, Evansville Police, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office and state police responded to the airport after reports of a man threatening airport staff with a knife.

At the airport, officers found the man inside the airport lobby with a knife, with no one else nearby.

Officers negotiated with the man for around 15 minutes. The Evansville Police Department said officers gave "numerous commands" for the man to drop the knife during the negotiations, which he never did. The department said the man "yelled obscenities at the officers, jumped out of his seat, and aggressively moved towards officers with the knife in hand."

Three Evansville Police Department officers, as well as sheriff's office deputies and state police troopers, fired shots at the man, who was then taken to an Evansville hospital.

In a release around 6 a.m. Saturday, Evansville police said the man was in critical condition.

No officers were injured during the incident, which remains under investigation.

The three Evansville Police Department officers who fired their guns were placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

ISP and Evansville police said a press conference will "likely be held" on Monday, Nov. 20, to provide more information on the incident.
