Authorities identify 39-year-old man killed in Marion police shooting

A state police spokesperson said no officers were injured.

MARION, Ind. — Indiana State Police is investigating after a man was killed in police shooting in Marion Monday morning.

An ISP spokesperson confirmed to 13News that two Marion Police Department officers involved in the incident were not injured. Police have identified the man who was shot and killed as 39-year-old Michael Guy.

Marion Police got a phone call just after 5 a.m. on July 15 that Guy was allegedly violating a protective order at a home in the 2100 block of West 8th Street, near Lincoln Park on the west side of the city. There was also a warrant out for Guy's arrest at the time.

Police said Guy "resisted forcefully" when police tried to arrest him.

"During the struggle, Mr. Guy was able to disarm one of the officers by ripping off the duty holster, which contained the handgun, off of his duty belt," Indiana State Police Sgt. Steven Glass said. "One of the city officers then used his department issued taser, which proved to be ineffective."

Guy allegedly said he intended to kill the officer. Another officer shot and killed Guy.

"He was just a loving person," said Guy's mother Vera Cole. "Michael was a real working hard person. He cared about everybody, especially family."

"He was a great person," added Guy's nephew, Marcus Bounds, Jr.

Guy is a father to seven children. Guy's family says his oldest child celebrated a 15th birthday Monday, the same day he died.

Cole told 13News the woman who originally called Marion Police to Guy's home is his estranged wife.

The family says they're distraught at the deadly outcome.

"Now I just pray. Pray," Cole said. "And hope that I find justice, the right justice for this."

Marion Police Chief David Gilbert asked ISP to investigate. Both officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

"Prayers go out to our officers, and prayers to the family of Michael Guy. We're excited to be working with Indiana State Police to come to a conclusive decision on what to do next for our city," Marion Mayor Ronald Morrell Jr. said at a news conference.
