WHITE COUNTY, Ind. — Indiana State Police is investigating after deputies in northwest Indiana fatally shot a person who allegedly came toward them with a knife Tuesday night.
Around 10:30 p.m. Oct. 8, deputies with the White County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported disturbance at a liquor store in the town of Monon, which is roughly 30 miles north of Lafayette.
Deputies were told an intoxicated person was causing the disturbance, and that person had left on foot by the time they arrived.
"Deputies gathered information indicating the suspect had fled to a nearby residence on State Road 16 in Monon," an ISP spokesperson said in a statement.
At the home, deputies found the suspect, who ISP said had a knife.
"The suspect purportedly advanced toward the deputies, at which point at least one deputy discharged their firearm, striking the suspect," the spokesperson said.
The suspect was taken to a Monticello hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. The White County Coroner's Office will identify them once family has been notified.
The state police investigation into the incident is ongoing, and "no further details are available at this time," the spokesperson said.
