PUTNAM COUNTY, Indiana — Indiana State Police is investigating a fatal crash on U.S. 40 that left a man dead Wednesday afternoon.

ISP said the crash happened at the intersection of U.S. 40 and State Road 240 around 4:20 p.m. Aug. 7 involving a passenger vehicle and a pickup truck.

Police said a 2004 Lexus driven by Kent Smith, 67, of Coatesville, Indiana, was trying to go eastbound on U.S. 40 from southbound State Road 240.

Officers said Smith didn't see the 2021 Ford pickup truck that was going westbound on U.S. 40, driven by a 59-year-old man from Quincy, Indiana.

ISP said the pickup truck driver tried an "evasive driving maneuver" but wasn't able to stop from crashing.

The force of the crash caused the Lexus to go off the road, rolling over on its top.

Smith was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police said drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a contributing factor of the accident.
