ISP investigating single-car crash that killed 18-year-old in northern Indiana

The crash happened just before 6 a.m. Sunday.

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind — A teenager was killed in a single-car crash early Sunday morning in northern Indiana.

Indiana State Police troopers are investigating after Elkhart County Sheriff's Office deputies found a truck in the woods near the Indiana Toll Road just before 6 a.m. Dec. 3.

According to a media release, the truck was going westbound on the Toll Road near the County Road 10 overpass when it ran off the north side of the road and crashed into a guardrail, then rolled into the woods.

The driver of the truck, later identified as 18-year-old Mauro Cesar Amaya Reyes, of Middlebury, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials suspect excessive speed and alcohol were factors in this crash, and police believe the driver was not wearing a seatbelt.

The right lane of the Toll Road was closed for the investigation for around three hours.
