Indianapolis Public Schools announces 2024 Principal of the Year

Principal Valerie Clark, head of Ernie Pyle School 90, received the surprise announcement during a school assembly Monday.

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Public Schools (IPS) has named its "Principal of the Year" award recipient for 2024.

Principal Valerie Clark, head of Ernie Pyle School 90, received the surprise announcement during a school assembly from IPS Superintendent Dr. Aleesia Johnson Monday morning.

Johnson described Clark as an unwavering beacon of dedication and leadership.

"Valerie’s tireless efforts in improving student test scores and fostering a dynamic work environment for her staff exemplify her commitment to education and the betterment of her school community,” Johnson said. “With her guidance, Ernie Pyle thrives as a place where both students and educators can reach their full potential."

The award recognizes principals who go above and beyond in their position while creating an exceptional educational environment.

Clark has been serving IPS students and families as an educator for more than 28 years.

“The most rewarding aspect of being a principal is rewarding students for making growth,” Clark said. “Growing academically, socially and behaviorally is just as important as being proficient on standardized tests."

She earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education at IUPUI and a master's degree from Indiana Wesleyan University, where she also completed her Principal Licensure Program.

Clark was nominated for the award by the Brynn Kardash, executive director of school supervision K-6.
