Inmate found unresponsive at Marion County Adult Detention Center; death investigation underway

Richard Goode, 29, was found unresponsive during a headcount around 3:15 p.m. Saturday, Mar. 2, the sheriff's office said.

INDIANAPOLIS — An investigation is underway into the death of an inmate found unresponsive at the Marion County Adult Detention Center Saturday afternoon.

According to the Marion County Sheriff's Office, 29-year-old Richard Goode was found unresponsive in his cell shortly after 3:15 p.m. Mar. 2 during a headcount. 

"On-site medical staff immediately rendered aid until Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services (IEMS) and Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) arrived and continued life-saving efforts until 3:40 PM where Mr. Goode was pronounced deceased," said a sheriff's office spokesperson in a statement.

Goode's death is being investigated by IMPD, the Forensic Services Agency and the Marion County Sheriff's Office Internal Affairs Unit.

Goode was being held at the Adult Detention Center on multiple charges, including armed robbery, possession of a narcotic drug, theft, false identity statement, possession of paraphernalia and unlawful carrying of a handgun with a prior felony conviction.

His jury trial was scheduled to begin May 1.
