VIGO COUNTY, Ind. — A Vigo County sheriff's deputy is on leave after investigators say he shot and killed an armed person Wednesday afternoon in Terre Haute.
On June 14, the sheriff's office got a call just before 5 p.m. to check on someone expressing thoughts of suicide, according to an Indiana State Police spokesperson.
Off-duty Deputy Dayton Huebner was first on the scene. According to the spokesperson, Huebner tried to communicate with the man, identified as 45-year-old James Dockery. Officers told Dockery to drop the gun they said he was holding. Instead, police said Dockery pointed the gun at them.
Huebner fired one shot, killing Dockery, ISP said.
Neither deputy was hurt.
Huebner is now on administrative leave, which is protocol in these cases.
The Vigo County sheriff requested state police handle the investigation. Detectives will forward a report to the Vigo County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
