JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind. (WTHR) — The Johnson County Sheriff's Department is conducting a death investigation after an inmate at the county jail was found unresponsive in his cell Saturday night.
A correctional officers found 28-year-old Joan M. Ventura not breathing in his cell while doing a watch tour. Correctional officers tried to revive the man by using a defibrillator and doing CPR.
First responders from the Franklin Fire Department and the Seals Ambulance Service responded to jail and also unsuccessfully tried lifesaving techniques. Ventura was pronounced dead at the jail.
Ventura had been in the jail since March 25. He was in jail for outstanding warrants out of Greenwood City Court for probation violation.
His death is not believed to have been related to foul play or COVID-19. The jail is also still fully staffed, but with precautions due to COVID-19. An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
