INDIANAPOLIS — IndyGo is showing off the newest buses in its fleet.
The 60-foot electric battery buses will serve the upcoming Purple Line, a 15-mile route that will connect downtown Indianapolis to the city of Lawrence.
The buses are more environmentally friendly than previous buses used by IndyGo. The agency says the technology used by the buses uses near zero-emission propulsion systems, which they say will improve air quality and reduce noise pollution.
IndyGo is also using solar panels on its West Washington Street facility to produce some of the energy needed to charge the new buses.
Once completed later this year, IndyGo estimates riders will only wait about 15 minutes between buses at stops along the Purple Line. One end of the route is at the IndyGo Transit Center downtown, traveling along Capitol Avenue to 18th Street, then north on Meridian Street to East 38th Street through the east side. The route then heads north on Post Road to near East 56th Street, terminating at Fort Benjamin Harrison and Ivy Tech in Lawrence.
Half of the cost of the $188 million project is going toward infrastructure upgrades like street paving and new curbs and sidewalks.
