IndyGo Foundation gets $500,000 to upgrade near east side bus stops

The cash will make the bus stops more accessible for riders with disabilities at 91 bus stops.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Department of Public Works (DPW) is giving IndyGo a big grant to upgrade 91 bus stops on the near east side of Indianapolis.

The goal is to improved Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, to improve accessibility.

The upgrades will include more sidewalk connections, boarding areas and curb ramps that will connect the stops to local streets or driveways.

The stops were selected based on IndyGo's existing plan to upgrade ADA compliance and provide services to minority populations and families living below the poverty line.

The first phase of these stops will be constructed in 2025. The second round will be built in 2026.

Currently, many near east side riders have a hard time getting to their buses.

“Improving connection to life's essential services means ensuring IndyGo's bus stops are accessible by every individual," Emily Meaux, IndyGo Foundation executive director, said. "Upgrades like these are necessary to help provide increased mobility solutions, equitable access and opportunity for riders to share in a growing economy and healthier city, all of which the IndyGo Foundation strives to expand.”

The money comes from the Indy Neighborhood Infrastructure Partnership (INIP), which has spent nearly $2.5 million on investments in infrastructure around the city this year

This project was made possible through a public/private partnership combining federal funds, the DPW cost share and private funds from IU Health, IU Health Foundation and IndyGo Foundation donors.
