INDIANAPOLIS — A new multi-use trail aimed at improving safety and accessibility is coming to Indianapolis' near east side.
This week, Indy DPW began work on a trail along the Southeastern Avenue corridor from Washington Street to Leeds Avenue. The department said the project "is designed to foster a stronger sense of community by linking downtown with the near southeast side of Indianapolis."
The trail will be just over one mile long and cost around $2.1 million, featuring 56 accessible ramps, six crosswalks and nearly 5,500 feet of trail.
"This trail will serve as a critical route for people who walk or bike into downtown from neighborhoods on the near-southeast side,” Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett said in a statement. “But it also looks ahead to provide easy pedestrian access to developments at Twin Aire Shopping Plaza and the old drive-in. Combined, these efforts are giving more choice and freedom of movement to neighbors on the southeast side.”
Indy DPW did not say how long it expects construction on the project to last.
