INDIANAPOLIS — Dozens of Hoosiers are coming together Christmas Eve morning to continue a special holiday tradition in downtown Indianapolis.
Every year, the Indy Christmas Caroling Big Band travels through downtown playing music and spreading cheer for those who are having a tough time during the holidays.
"We carol to people in need, people who may have not had the best year, who need some cheering up," director Daniel Nix said.
From family homes to shopping malls, the nonprofit band makes sure to travel to all areas so that everyone can hear. The group is making eight to 10 stops on Christmas Eve.
"We are all here super early in the morning getting ready, having rehearsal to do all of these stops because it means something to everyone," Nix said.
"It is the best thing that you can do as a person, as a human on this Earth, to just make somebody else happy," said a volunteer with the band. "I love it so much."
The band was formed by a few close friends in 2013 and has since expanded into two full bands of musicians from all over the state. It currently has more than 60 volunteers alongside the band members.
"This is such a unique way to share we are with them, and honestly, that's why I've stayed for so long," guitarist Eric Garcia said.
Even though the band spends a few minutes at each location, it gives the people they visit a chance to breathe during the holidays. No matter if this is their first or 10th year, there's a shared feeling to get out and spread holiday cheer.
