INDOT wants to hear your ideas for a safer I-65

INDOT is hoping to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety on the stretch of I-65 between Fletcher Place and I-465 on the southeast side.

INDIANAPOLIS — INDOT wants your input on how it can improve a key stretch of Interstate 65 in Indianapolis.

They will be holding a public meeting at Frederick Douglass SUPER School 19 on Wednesday, July 24 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be a presentation at 6 p.m. You can also make a comment on the official website for the project. You can also sign up for email and text updates there.

The I-65 Safety and Efficiency project covers about 5 miles of the interstate between Fletcher Place to the north and I-465 to the south.

The project will include adding capacity, bridge improvements, pavement patching and resurfacing, and better drainage. INDOT will add a lane in each direction between I-465 and I-70.

INDOT expects to wrap up design on the project this year.

Construction is expected to begin in spring 2025.

INDOT does not have an estimated time that work would be wrapped up.

There will also be upgrades to several bridges along I-65:

  • Replace the Hanna Avenue bridge over I-65; will be able to accommodate a future pedestrian pathway
  • Rehabilitate and widen the northbound bridge over Morris/Prospect streets
  • Widen northbound bridges over Naomi Street and East Pleasant Run (North and South) parkways
  • Bridge deck overlays for multiple bridges in the project area
