INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — The elephants at the Indianapolis Zoo are getting more room to roam.
The zoo announced on Tuesday that Tembo Camp will open next summer. Tembo means elephant in Swahili.
"This stunning new space that’s currently under construction will offer our elephants room to roam, and guests will get to see firsthand how the elephants are cared for and hear about global conservation efforts the Zoo supports," the zoo wrote in its release.
The new enclosure will give guests an up-close experience, including being able to touch the giant mammals.
The Tembo Camp will open Memorial Day weekend 2020.
Parking expansion
The zoo is also planning a major change to parking and you will get to see the expansion of parking at ZooBoo and Christmas at the Zoo this year.
Starting Oct. 17-27 during ZooBoo, parking will be available at the new South Lot as well as a shuttle to the zoo.
The land was purchased from Ambrose Property Group off of Harding Street and between the railroad tracks. That area is being turned into parking for the zoo.
Future plans would then include turning the current zoo parking lot into space to expand and add exhibits.
