INDIANAPOLIS — There is a new way for people in the community to get healthy food. The Indianapolis Urban League opened a food pantry on Wednesday, Nov. 8.
The pantry will only be accessible to families who are participating in the Urban League’s job training or educational programs.
“I said, 'We have to do something in addition to the monthly drive-thru food distribution to help program participants access to food supplies and resources,'” Urban League president Tony Mason said.
The pantry will be open every Wednesday at their offices, located on Indiana Avenue, near St. Clair Street.
Mason said many of the people going through the programs can’t work while they’re training. This is a way to help them make ends meet.
Tricia Kinkead was among the first group of people to shop the Indianapolis Urban League’s food pantry.
“Meats, canned goods, vegetables, breads,” Kinkead said. “They have quite a bit of stuff. It’s enough to feed us for two weeks.”
The organization will still continue the monthly food distribution, which is open to the public.
