Indianapolis Ten Point Coalition expands to neighborhood on Indy's north side

Ten Point leader Rev. Charles Harrison said IMPD has deemed at least three blocks in the Mapleton-Fall Creek neighborhood as hot spots for crime.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Ten Point Coalition has expanded its patrol to the Mapleton-Fall Creek area on the city’s north side.

Ten Point leader Rev. Charles Harrison said IMPD has deemed at least three blocks along Pennsylvania Street as hot spots for crime. They started patrolling last Wednesday.

The group's focus is to curb violence and get to know people living in the neighborhoods. In the process the group has seen a reduction in other crimes.

Now, neighborhoods are contacting the coalition for help.

"They have expressed some concerns and wanted us to patrol that area,” said Harrison. “So, we are going to be working with them to do what we call public safety walks.

T.K. Slack, who lives on North New Jersey Street, between East 33rd and East 32nd streets, contacted the Ten Point Coalition after several cars in the neighborhood were vandalized.

He said the vandalism happened two days after he moved in.

"We were eager to see what we could do together,” said Slack. “To come together as a neighborhood and watch out for each other. Others gave information to us that this doesn't happen often which we are happy to hear.”

He gathered a group of several other concerned neighbors, and they are now working with Ten Point to organize their own public safety walks.

Slack said he and others generally feel safe in the neighborhood, but they want to make sure it stays that way.

Ten Point Coalition will meet with Slack and other neighbors on March 19.
