Indy residents still cleaning up from Helene remnants

Indianapolis DPW and AES Indiana are out working to clear trees and debris from roads and also repair downed power lines.

INDIANAPOLIS — Nearly 48 hours after heavy rain and winds came through central Indiana, many residents are still cleaning up.

On the city's east side, near 16th Street and Shannon Avenue, a large tree has blocked the intersection.

"When it hit the ground, it shook and you felt it in the house," Lanor Williams said.

Neighbors say the tree fell around 6:30 p.m. Friday, taking several power lines with it. They say it caused the lines to spark and even a couple cars were hit.

"I was just stuck, I did not know what to do, I thought of those survival movies," Williams said.

It wasn't until late Saturday night when those neighbors got their power back. But many in the city are still waiting. At last check, AES has reported over 12,000 people in the city without power.

Williams said she's thankful crews spent the last couple of days on her street, but she knows it will take them a long time to get throughout the city.

"You want somebody who knows what they are doing, you just don't want anybody hurt," she said. "They are getting around to you, be patient and happy you are safe."

If you're in Indianapolis and you encounter downed tree limbs or debris in the road, you're asked to call the Mayor's Action Center at 317-327-4622
