Indianapolis man clocked driving over 100 mph in west side construction zone

Indiana State Police Master Trooper Joel Flores clocked the 22-year-old driver doing 107 mph in a 45 mph zone on Interstate 465.

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis man was arrested for driving more than double the speed limit in a construction zone Tuesday.

Indiana State Police Master Trooper Joel Flores clocked the 22-year-old driver doing 107 mph in a 45 mph zone on Interstate 465. Workers were onsite when the violation occurred, according to ISP Sgt. John Perrine.

The driver was traveling north on the interstate near Interstate 70 on the west side of Indianapolis when he was stopped.

Perrine posted a photo of Flores' radar gun, showing the speed at 106 mph, explaining that it dropped 1 mph after the "initial clock" as Flores was tracking the vehicle and locking in a speed.

The driver was booked in the Marion County Jail on preliminary charges of reckless driving in a work zone.

Driving recklessly or aggressively in a work zone could subject the driver of fines up to $5,000. If a highway worker is injured or killed by a reckless driver in a work zone, there may be a fine of $10,000 and a sentence of six years in jail.

Starting in August, INDOT will begin a pilot program to place cameras in work zones to monitor speed. Cars traveling more than 11 miles per hour above the posted speed limit will be photographed, with the vehicle's owner receiving a warning, followed by a $75 fine for the second offense and $150 for each violation thereafter. The warnings and fines will be sent through the mail.

The program was created by HEA 1015 in the 2023 legislative session, which allows INDOT to deploy cameras in up to four worksites at any given time.
