A 20-year-old man was arrested near the downtown Indianapolis canal overnight for carrying a handgun without a license. Indianapolis Metro Police also say the gun he was carrying had an altered serial number.

Teray Jones of Indianapolis was arrested. Police were called to the scene in the 200 block of N. Senate Avenue by the downtown canal at around 9:18 pm on a report of a disturbance.

IMPD had stepped up patrols for the Fourth of July celebrations, which draw tens of thousands of people to downtown Indianapolis. An officer on bike patrol responded, along with other units, to investigate a "large disturbance."

Police arrested Jones, who had a 9mm semi-automatic pistol with an altered serial number on it, and several live rounds.

In a separate incident, a young man was shot and killed near the corner of Maryland and Meridian Streets in downtown Indianapolis after the fireworks display Thursday night.
