INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Liberation Center and community members joined with Gary Harrell's family for a rally in the location where he was shot by an IMPD officer.
"We are tired, frustrated and fed up," Harrell's sister said at Saturday's rally.
In the edited bodycam video released by IMPD, Harrell can be seen with a gun in his hand as he ran from a traffic stop and was shot from behind Aug. 3 at East 34th Street and North Parker Avenue. Harrell's death is one of the eight fatal officer-involved shootings of the 15 this year in Indianapolis.
"It's very easy to show up to a rally. It's very difficult to put in the work behind the scenes," said Dani Abdullah, with the Party of Socialism and Liberation.
The work the Indianapolis Liberation Center and other organizations are doing now includes going to the Marion County Prosecutor's office every week to demand for justice.
IMPD Police Chief Randal Taylor said the number of shootings in a short period of time is concerning. He said each case is different, but in most of them, the suspect was not following police commands.
"If you have a weapon out and you're not going to put it away when we tell you to, sometimes, bad things happen," Taylor said.
Taylor said the DOJ already looks at each of these shootings but has no problem if they or any other outside agency wants to take a closer look.
"When they are completed, I think we'll have a better picture of what's there. If it comes out to our officers making poor decisions, then obviously, we'll have to address those and find ways to combat that," Taylor said.
Elder Mmoja Ajabu said he has filed a lawsuit against the prosecutor's office, City-County Council and the building owner. There will be a hearing Wednesday, Nov. 1.
