Indianapolis firefighters escape serious injuries in crash during run to a house fire

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Four Indianapolis Fire Department firefighters and a civilian are okay after a crash Saturday morning on the east side at the intersection of 10th Street and Emerson Avenue.

IFD Engine 20 was on the way to a reported house fire with possible entrapment in the 400 block of N. Lasalle Street just before 9:30 a.m. when the collision occurred.

According to a report from IFD, the engine went through the intersection when it was struck by a truck driven by a 53-year-old man. The fire truck slide through the intersection across 10th Street and hit a turn lane pole and brick pillars. Before coming to a stop, the engine also knocked over a light pole.

Engine 20 had significant damage from the brick pillars, fence and the base of the light pole punctured the underside of the truck.

According to IMPD, Family Video had placed the rocks and fencing in the area due to several previous crashes at the intersection that ended with vehicles in their parking lot.

The driver of the truck that hit the fire truck was not injured but one firefighter was transported to Methodist Hospital to be checked out for back pain. He was treated and released.
