At least 40 veterans displaced after fire at downtown Indy HVAF building

The fire broke out at the Helping Veterans and Families building located in the 900 block of North Pennsylvania Street shortly after 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

INDIANAPOLIS — Flames were visible from Interstate 65 in downtown Indianapolis on Saturday night when a large fire broke out in the 900 block of North Pennsylvania Street

According the Indianapolis Fire Department, the fire was initially reported as a building alarm around 9:35 p.m. on Oct. 26. When firefighters arrived, they found the HVAF building and its surrounding apartments fully engulfed in flames.

IFD says the building was between two or three stories tall and had 39 units housing at least 50 residents. The fire was escalated to a two-alarm fire after parts of the building began to collapse.

According to IFD, they have located 40 out of the 50 residents of the apartments. They are unsure whether or not the missing residents were not home at the time of the fire or if they were inside. All occupants are said to be military veterans.

IFD says two people were taken to Eskenazi Hospital with slight injuries and no firefighters were injured.
