INDIANAPOLIS — Firefighters in Indianapolis sent help Wednesday to their counterparts in Ukraine.
The department packed up donated turnout gear and EMS supplies to send to the war-torn country. The equipment was sent to Chicago in partnership with Ukrainian Society of Indianapolis co-founder Svitlana Ramer.
"The need for firefighters supplies is so great there because of constant shelling, constant explosions and missile strikes," Ramer said.
The organization worked with IFD to identify decommissioned gear that could be washed and packed up to send to Ukraine.
Indianapolis firefighters hosted three firefighters from Ukraine this summer during the annual Fire Department Instructors Conference downtown. The firefighters trained alongside their American colleagues, learning more about the techniques used to rescue people inside collapsed homes and buildings.
"Our part in helping them is a very small contribution but one that we support wholeheartedly," IFD posted Wednesday afternoon.
