INDIANAPOLIS — A 67-year-old man has died after a fire at his house on the east side of Indianapolis Friday afternoon.
Shortly before 4 p.m. on Dec. 8, the Indianapolis Fire Department was called to a working house fire in the 3500 block of East Morris Street, near Southeastern Avenue and Prospect Street. According to IFD, one man was found outside the home and was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
The man, identified as William Helms, later died from his injuries, IFD said. He is the 10th person to die from a fire in Indianapolis this year, according to IFD.
Neighbors told firefighters that Helms lived alone in the home and was able to get himself out of the house when it caught fire. Those neighbors found Helms injured in his yard and provided medical care until firefighters and medics arrived.
IFD is currently investigating what might have caused the fire. Preliminary investigation shows combustible material that was placed too close to a space heater may have started the fire.
