Indianapolis ER doctor returns from volunteering in Israel

Dr. Louis Profeta said he is one of around 6,000 doctors who volunteered to go to Israel.

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis doctor is back home from Israel after working in a war zone.

Dr. Louis Profeta is an emergency room physician with Ascension St. Vincent. He has been practicing for more than 30 years.

"Well, initially, we weren't sure what we were going to be doing," Profeta said.

He volunteered to travel there and help treat trauma victims and train medical staff on how to handle mass trauma.

However, decades of experience couldn't prepare Profeta for what he experienced in Israel.

"Your phone would go off, and the alarms would sound, and you'd see rockets coming in," Profeta said. "I saw cars that still had human remains in them, and they're still trying to determine if they're going to bury the vehicles or not."

He was stationed in a hospital on the northern border near Lebanon. He spent about three weeks there.

Profeta said he is one of around 6,000 doctors who volunteered to go to Israel.

"Almost everybody in that country knows somebody that was either killed or kidnapped," Profeta said.

Profeta said the strength of the Israeli resonates with him.
