INDIANAPOLIS — We're getting a fresh look at what's next for the Fatal Crash Review Team in Indianapolis.
In February, the City-County Council approved changes to the team, allowing it to consider fatal crashes and those with serious injuries.
On Thursday, the city's Department of Public Works unveiled to the council what that expanded effort will look like.
Starting in July, the review team will probe intersections where a high number of serious crashes happen.
The team will investigate six intersections each year. The first intersection will be West 79th Street and North Michigan Road on the city's northwest side.
City leaders say it's an effort to improve safety on Indianapolis streets.
"By investigating areas with the highest incidence of serious crashes, as well as fatal crashes, we believe we can better utilize the data available to us to identify patterns of conflict and implement both short-term and long-term safety improvements as a result," Indy DPW Director Brandon Herget said.
The team will utilize the Automated Reporting Information Exchange System crash database, which will identify locations having the highest number of deadly crashes within a two-month study period.
