Indianapolis city leaders completing more projects to help prevent future flooding

The city has nearly doubled it's budget from just 2017 for stormwater-related projects.

INDIANAPOLIS — Flooding and high waters may have receded in Indianapolis, but concerns over it happening again remain.

"We have around 20 storm water projects either in construction or expected to be in construction this year," said Kyle Bloyd, spokesperson with the Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW).

The city contracts with Citizens Energy Group's contact center to help with residents stormwater drainage concerns.

"Our call center then routes the issues either back to Indy DPW crews for further assessment (in areas of the city where storm sewer and sanitary sewer are separate) or to Citizens crews (in areas of the city where these sewers are combined)," said Ben Easley, spokesperson for Citizens Energy Group.

One of the areas of concern was Binford Boulevard and 75th Street. That area had major flooding, shutting down the road and standing vehicles in the water.

13News has learned the infrastructure in that location is owned by Indy DPW, but maintenance is done mostly by Citizens Energy crews.

Both agencies determined the flooding at 75th and Binford, as well as other areas, was due to heavy and sustained rains that temporarily overwhelmed the stormwater system.

"We're seeing more of these big, heavy sudden rain events and so we're adding a senior project manager to the storm water division in 2024 along with three additional field inspectors. That will bring them up to nine total. We will have one per township so hopefully we will be able to get around more quickly and find these issues," said Bloyd.

DPW is working on other projects including a $9 million project to improve drainage in the area of Dr. Andrew J. Brown Avenue, 30th Street and also Keystone Avenue, later this year.
