DECATUR COUNTY, Ind. (WTHR) – A woman has died after a crash in Decatur County Saturday afternoon.
State police responded to reports of a two-vehicle crash State Route 46 near County Road 750 West around 2:40 p.m.
Investigators say a white 2006 Honda Odyssey mini-van, driven by 61-year-old Wanda Lutane of Columbus, Indiana, was traveling westbound on State Route 46 near County Road 750 West.
For an unknown reason, Lutane’s vehicle crossed the centerline into the path of an eastbound gray 2015 Toyota Camry, being driven by 42-year-old Maria Verona Garcia of West Palm Beach, Florida.
The vehicles collided head on in the eastbound lane of State Route 46, according to officials. As a result of the crash, Garcia’s vehicle overturned and the occupants of the vehicles were trapped.
Garcia sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lutane was transported by medical helicopter to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana for treatment of serious injuries. Her current condition is unknown.
A passenger in Garcia’s vehicle, Koceila Chaouadi, age 33, Columbus, Indiana was transported to St. Vincent’s Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
All occupants were believed to have been properly restrained at the time of the crash.
Maria Garcia’s family has been notified.
It is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
