Vigo County teen struck by fire department vehicle dies

Fire crews were responding to a brush fire that investigators believe was started by the teen that was struck.

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. — A teenager who was struck by a fire department's pickup truck in Vigo County has died.

Tyler Wilson, 17, of Vigo County was flown to an Indianapolis hospital after the crash on Wednesday. He later died from his injuries, WTWO reported.

Fire crews with the Prairieton Fire Department had been called out for a brush fire just outside Terre Haute. According to the Vigo County Sheriff's Office, investigators now believe Wilson started the fire, which was reportedly set to 10 bales of hay.

Friday night, the fire department posted a statement to Facebook, extending condolences to Wilson's family.

"We are deeply saddened by this incident. This is truly a tragedy, and we are so very sorry for the loss of this young individual," the statement read.
