USDA investing more than $90 million in rural Indiana infrastructure projects

INDIANAPOLIS — The USDA announced $90 million in loans and grants are headed to rural communities across Indiana to improve infrastructure.

According to the announcement, South Central Indiana REMC will use a $30 million loan to improve and expand electricity. The fund will help connect 1,880 consumers and build and improve 291 miles of line. 

The funds include $17,506,421 in smart grid technologies, including nine miles of fiber. South Central Indiana REMC serves Morgan, Monroe, Owen, Brown, Johnson, Putnam and Clay counties.

Additionally, the town of Frankton will use a $600,000 USDA grant to improve wastewater and stormwater systems. According to the USDA, the project will "reduce exposure to untreated wastewater discharges, improve water quality, and address issues identified in the January 2014 Agreed Order issued by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM)."

Other federal funding has been awarded for Huntington, Petersburg and Kankakee Valley.
