INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — 2020 will be filled with full moons and in February, the Super Snow Moon will light up the night sky.

Each month's full moon has been given different nicknames based on the time of year in which it occurs. Often, the origins of these nicknames can be traced back hundreds of years to Native Americans or early Colonial Americans settling in North America.

According to the Farmer's Almanac, the February moon is called the Snow Moon because of the typically heavy snowfall that happens during the month.

This weekend's full moon will also be the first in a series of supermoons.

A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon's closest approach to Earth in its orbit, according to Space.com. The moon appears brighter and closer than normal.

The Super Snow moon will be visible late Feb. 8 into the morning of Feb. 9. The moon will be at its peak at 2:34 a.m. Feb. 9.
