Speed limit going up on I-65 in southern Indiana

INDOT is increasing the speed limit on several stretches of interstate in southern Indiana.

SELLERSBURG, Ind. (WTHR) - Your drive to Louisville and points south will soon get a little quicker.

INDOT is increasing the speed limit on several stretches of interstate in southern Indiana.

Drivers on southbound I-65 currently have to slow down from 70 mph to 55 mph when they pass through Sellersburg. But that is about to change.

INDOT officials say this spring, drivers will be able to legally drive 70 mph until the interchange with I-265, a distance of about 5 miles. From there, the speed limit will increase from 55 mph to 65 mph until Exit 1 on I-65.

The speed limit from that point to the state line on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge will be 60 mph, an increase of 5 mph.

The speed limit on I-265 will increase from 55 mph to 65 mph from the Lewis and Clark Bridge to about a mile from the I-64 interchange.

State police told WAVE-TV in Louisville troopers wrote more than 7,000 tickets to drivers on I-65 and I-265 in Clark County alone.

There's no set date to change the speed limit, INDOT said. But state police plan to have extra troopers on the road when the changes take effect.

“I can assure you, there will still be speeders in the area and that we will still be out there to catch them," ISP Sgt. Carey Huls said.
