RICHMOND, Ind. — A Richmond man, killed during World War II, will finally be laid to rest next year.
The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency identified the remains of U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Gene F. Walker.
Walker died in a battle with German forces in November 1944.
According to a release, he was in a tank that caught on fire after it was hit. At the time, they were not able to recover his body.
An obituary at the time said Walker left behind his wife and a daughter he never got to meet.
A historian later discovered the unidentified remains at a U.S. military cemetery in Belgium.
The remains were disinterred in August 2021 and sent to the DPAA laboratory for analysis.
Scientists used DNA and other evidence to determine the remains belonged to Walker.
Walker will be buried in San Diego, California, in early 2024.
