SEYMOUR, Ind. (WTHR) — A southern Indiana man is facing neglect charges after his 8-year-old son died after accidentally ingesting methamphetamine.
According to WAVE-TV, police say Curtis Collman III thought the meth was cereal when he ate several grams of the drug, enough to kill a grown man, on June 21. After he fell ill, his father, Curtis Collman II, reached out to a friend who told him the boy may need medical care, but the father refused to call 911. When the friend tried to call, Collman II reportedly took her phone and threatened her life with a gun.
Collman II took his son to his mother's house, where the 8-year-old became so stiff he could not be moved. After the child began to turn blue, Collman II attempted CPR, but still didn't call 911.
Collman II's father eventually called police for help, but the child later died.
In addition to charges of neglect resulting in death and possession of methamphetamine, Collman II is facing charges of pointing a firearm, theft and failure to register as a sex offender.
He requested a bond reduction so he could spend time at home with his parents while he awaits trial. A judge denied that request and set a December trial date.
