No more loopholes: New 'Lamp Law' means white, amber headlights only

Get your colored headlights off the road.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — July 1, a new Indiana law will go into effect, specifying drivers have only white or amber headlights and red taillights and brake lights.

Gov. Eric Holcomb signed Senate Bill 266, nicknamed the "Lamp Law," March 21. Among other vehicle rules, the law outlines what colors the lights on a vehicle must be.

Here's a breakdown of the light rules:

  • Headlights must be white or amber.
  • Brake lights must be red.
  • Turn signal lights in the rear must be red or amber.
  • Turn signal lights in the front must be white or amber.

This means the blue, green, purple and other colored headlights seen on the road will be in violation.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Joe Watts told our newsgathering partners at the Herald Bulletin the new law simplifies the existing one, making it easier for law enforcement to know when you're in violation. He also suggested getting your car in line with the law as soon as possible, and not to anticipate a grace period.

"The Indiana State Police likes to give people a chance to become familiar with new laws, but each officer will make their own determination on a case to case basis," Watts said.

Watts also clarified that colored halo or ring lights would also violate the law.

Sgt. Todd Ringle posted photos of the halo lights to his Twitter, also saying they would be in violation.

Other rules included in the law include displaying your license plate horizontally with the registration expiration year in the upper right corner; equipping vehicles made before 1956 with two brake lights; and applying window tints only below the AS-1 line.
