Original Story:

Indiana State Police are revealing more details into a shooting in New Albany that left a man dead on Saturday.

The incident began around 5 p.m. when police said 68-year-old Kevin Campbell was inside his home when he heard a tap on his window. ISP said Campbell believed he knew who the person was and retrieved a small caliber rifle as he answered the door.

There, police said, he was met by 41-year-old Christopher Proctor who unsheathed a two-foot-long steel sword and began approaching the door toward Campbell. That’s when police said Campbell fired a shot, striking Proctor in the chest. Proctor fell back and died at the scene, according to police.

When police arrived at the scene, they initially thought they were arriving to a medical emergency with someone dead in the yard.

Campbell told officers he had shot Proctor and was taken in for further questioning by police.

Police revealed Campbell and Proctor had known each other for a year. Proctor had been inside the home prior to the shooting.

Campbell had contacted New Albany police to keep Proctor from coming onto his property, but Proctor allegedly kept showing up, most recently on Friday. Police confirmed Proctor had personal items inside the home and that Campbell no longer wanted to associate with him.

Since the men were acquaintances, the crime isn’t necessarily being classified as a home invasion, ISP said.

ISP doesn’t know if Campbell will face additional charges but said he was arrested for obstruction of justice because he waited to call police.

The investigation into the matter is ongoing.

Campbell is currently booked at the Floyd County Jail.
