MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WTHR) — It's one of the most photographed lighthouses in the country, but in Michigan City the lighthouse and ultra clean beach serves as a gathering place for families, couples going on the first date and photographers.

The lighthouse is THE symbol of Michigan City and is the only public operating lighthouse in Indiana. The walkway was used by lighthouse keepers for nearly 30 years to access the light house.

In 1933 the light on the pier was electrified.

In 1939 the U.S. Coast Guard took over the service. Today, it really has three purposes:

  1. Keep boats away from the beach.
  2. Serve as a symbol of Michigan City.
  3. Serve as a world class site for photographers.

To me, seeing so many different generations of folks who were enjoying this beautiful site made it a wonderful stop and the view of the sunset from the pier and beach drew hundreds.
